Så modtog jeg den nye Watchguard T35 firewall. Baseret på en Freescale T1024E PowerPC cpu e5500 med 2 x cores kørende 1200Mhz. Det er lille broderen til cpu´en, som bruges i deres større M300 model.

Langt om længe er der sat en ssd disk i enheden – micro SATA fra InnoDisk – https://www.innodisk.com/en/products/flash-storage/msata/mSATA_mini_3ME4
Hvad gør det så? Først en meget hurtigere boot tid – ikke at det gør så meget, men stadig dejligt, men nu har vi muligheden for at bruge disken, som cache for AV signatur, så vi ikke bruger vores kostbare hukommelse på det længere.  Godt nok har enheden 2GB memory, hvilket er nok lige nu, men erfaring viser, at det hurtigt for “ben at gå på” når Watchguard frigiver nyere firmware med nye sikkerheds tiltag. Så lur mig om de 2GB memory ikke er nok om 2-3 år.

De XTM25 enheder jeg købte for ganske få år siden, er allerede meget presset på memory, så visse funktioner har jeg simpelthen ikke kunne aktivere uden at enheden løber tør for memory. De har også kun 512MB memory. Men efter flere år har Watchguard da i Fireware 12.1.1 gjort, at vi kan tage et image backup på de små enheder ved at stoppe udvalgte processor inden backup påbegyndes. Det forstår jeg så ikke, at det skulle tage så langt tid at udvikle. Faktisk savner jeg stadig muligheden for at deaktivere visse services, som ikke benyttes, så der frigive memory til de services, vi bruger.

Firewallen har indbygget én PoE port, så nu er den medfølgende strømforsyning blevet en del større, da den skal give output nok til 48V PoE plus den strøm firewall selv tager.  Jeg ved ikke lige, hvor smart, jeg synes, en ekstern strømforsyning er her – den fylder mere og er ikke lige til at hænge op, hvis boksen monteres på en væg.
En smartere løsning ville være en ordentlig indbygget PSU.

Eller helt at undvære en indbygget PoE port. Jeg tror, de fleste, som anskaffer sig en T35 boks, allerede har en decideret switch, evt. med PoE. Hvis ikke, så er en ekstern PoE injektor et bedre valg, efter min mening.
